Philosophy

Our Aged Care Communities enact the very essence of the Wesley Mission Brisbane mission, vision and values.

The idea of walking alongside and in relationship with people to enhance their well-being is very strongly linked to an ecological approach to Aged Care and the Eden Alternative™.

Wesley Mission Brisbane’s Anam Cara was the first Residential Aged Care Community in Queensland to achieve full Registration with Eden in Oz and NZ® and has obtained recognition for all 10 Eden Principles.

All of our Residential Aged Care Communities embrace the Eden Alternative™.

The Eden Alternative™ in Aged Care
The Eden Alternative™ is a natural philosophy of care.

It encourages carers to focus on Aged Care facilities as homes that promote health and well-being, as opposed to facilities for the frail and elderly. This includes helping residents maximise control and independence within their life to help stave off the plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom. These plagues can quite seriously affect psychological health and well-being, but they can be overcome by enacting this wonderful philosophy of care.

The Eden philosophy is also totally consistent with the mission, vision and values of Wesley Mission Brisbane.

Wesley Mission Brisbane’s Anam Cara and Parkview have both been very successful pilot sites for the Eden Alternative™.

In February 2009, Wesley Mission Brisbane hosted the first onsite Eden Associate education session facilitated by Eden in Oz trainers, and as a result Wesley Mission Brisbane now has 62 Eden Alternative ™ Associates across all 14 Aged Care homes.

The Associates are now key players in a newly formed Eden Working Group. This group supports the spread and growth of Eden, empowering fellow staff to make a difference and change the way we all think and operate Aged Care Communities for the better.
