A little compassion can drive big change

Dancing fit for any age

Jan Manning, a Leisure & Lifestyle Coordinator at Parkview, was inspired to start dance classes at Uhl Hall after being told she had two left feet.

"We started in 1998, with a dancing teacher coming in to oversee the project. In the early days, residents from St. Marks and Jones House used to come to watch and join in the classes. One of the gentlemen from St. Marks was over 90."

Jan, and her partner Rob, now hold private lessons and small group classes on Wednesday night at Uhl Hall, from 5.30pm. – 8.30pm.

"We have a wide range of casual students coming to us. One of our couples, with a family member a resident in Parkview, happily told us one night that they had won a Latin competition at their local club, with a Rumba routine we had taught them."

Rob and Jan do regular dancing demonstrations in facilities at Wheller Gardens.

"These demos are very well received by the residents and staff, and the residents regale us with their stories of their dancing days, when they ‘danced the night away, and caught the last tram home.’ We love to do these demos, and feel we are bringing back to the residents some wonderful memories."

If you would like to participate in the dance classes, give Jan a call on 3621 4585.
