Jobseekers able to Focus on Future for another year
Another 60 disadvantaged jobseekers from around Logan City will receive assistance from Wesley Mission Brisbane's Future in Focus project in the next 12 months.
It will the second year in a row that jobseekers have benefited from the program thanks to continued State Government funding.
WMB Future in Focus Project Coordinator Gilliann Coverdale said last year’s project helped many people take positive steps and was sure this year’s would do the same.
“We talk to people when they first join the project to find out what they want to do and last year one Indigenous woman said she thought she wouldn’t be able to do anything and didn’t know where to start,” Ms Coverdale said.
“Through the Futures in Focus project we helped her develop and follow a plan to address the barriers she was facing and now she is studying a Certificate IV in Community Services (Welfare Work) with the goal of becoming a community support worker.
“Another woman, also a single mum, told us the project was amazing because after so many years of feeling like she was being ignored she got some help and is now studying to become a teacher aide.
“The project also supported a man who had been on the disability support pension for most of his adult life to overcome his low literacy and numeracy skills and earn the first formal qualifications in his life – Certificates II and III in Security Operations which includes first aid training and gaining a gun license.
“Futures in Focus also helped him prepare a resume and cover letter, which lead to one week of training with a local security provider and then a new full-time job so he can better provide for his family.”
“Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training,” said Gilliann and we are thrilled to be able to continue the program for the next year.”
