New service supports youth who are at risk of homelessness

Logan City’s youth can now sleep easy thanks to the launch of Wesley Mission Brisbane (WMB) Logan Youth Foyer Support Service and the opening of 22 furnished studio units in Woodridge on Tuesday 25 May 2010.

WMB Logan Youth Foyer Support Service provides up to three years of supported accommodation for young single people aged 16 to 25 years of age who are: homeless or at risk of homelessness, on the social housing waiting list, have low to medium support needs, single with no dependants and willing to engage in earning or learning options.

“Logan Youth Foyer Support Service is about providing a long-term, affordable housing option for single young people who would otherwise have limited renting and housing alternatives. The support provided is aimed at assisting young people in all life areas to make the transition into adulthood successfully with a specific focus on career pathways”, said Jasmine Lind, WMB Logan Youth Foyer Support Service Coordinator.

Tenants have said, “It’s good, we’re all gaining living skills. It’s private and our things are safe. It is supported independence, a step before you go out on your own”.

Twenty-two studio style fully furnished units have been provided by the Department of Communities (Housing and Homelessness Services) under the Community Managed-House – Studio Units program, with an additional two units for onsite services.

The service provides young people with access to career planning support through Career Keys giving them assistance to access, maintain work and make career choices.
This service is a partnership between Wesley Mission Brisbane (support services), the Department of Housing Services Logan Area Office (building managers), Gold Coast Housing Company (tenancy managers) and Career Keys (career advisors).

The official opening commences at 10.00am on Tuesday 25 May and tours of one of the units. Artwork displays from young people in the service will be displayed and the Honourable Karen Struthers MP, Minister for Community Services and Housing and Minister for Women, local and State Queensland Government staff and local non-government agencies will be attending.

Wesley Mission Brisbane was established in 1907 and leads the way in providing aged care, youth support, disability services and support for the disadvantaged.
