Mental Health Community Support Services

Mental Health Community Support Services includes Individual Recovery Support Program and Group Based Peer Recovery Support Program. Both are based in the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service region.

Individual Recovery Support

The Gold Coast Mental Health Community Support Service offers adults with severe and/or persistent mental illness an individual recovery support program to assist skills development, relapse prevention and overall support for recovery.

This support program is offered for high intensity and frequency support for up to three months, ranging from 2-3 contacts per week. The following nine months involves low intensity support, either weekly or fortnightly. The programs assists participants access a range of individualised, non-clinical, holistic, psychosocial wraparound supports. The program helps participants:

  • Maintain good physical health and mental health
  • Manage and preventing relapse 
  • Enhance social inclusion and connection
  • Build capacity for autonomy, management of stress and self-advocacy
  • Access employment
  • Access additional services (e.g. Drug and Alcohol, NDIS)
  • Carer support 
  • Access to Peer Group Recovery Programs.

Eligibility criteria for participants include:

  • 18 years and over
  • Severe and/or persistent mental illness, with a desire to actively work on their recovery to enhance their skills
  • Currently receiving clinical care through a Gold Coast Mental Health Service for at least the first three months of the program
  • Priority will be given to individuals who are ineligible or not currently accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), as well as those experiencing frequent hospitalisations related to their mental illness.

Group Based Peer Recovery Support

This group program aims to empower and support individuals by working through group processes, sharing recovery experiences and developing support networks and social connections. Groups are a mix of structured and unstructured sessions and include peer support, physical adventure/ activity and creative arts. A calendar of activities will be available for participants to explore.

This group support program offers up to 12 months access to a variety of program activities, hosted in various community settings. Each session runs for approximately two hours. Led by qualified peer workers with a lived experience of recovery, participants have the opportunity to:

  • Share recovery experiences
  • Explore new activities and make friends 
  • Focus on building sustainable supports in the community Group Based Peer Recovery Support.
Eligibility criteria for participants include:

  • 18 years and over
  • Severe and/or persistent mental illness, with a desire to actively engage in a group recovery program to enhance their skills and connection with others in the community
  • Participants currently receiving support through the Individual Recovery Support Program (IRSP).

Speak with your IRSP recovery worker about the groups you are interested in. There is no cost or minimal cost for most groups.
